Overview

Michael Escuriola is a Cuban drummer and percussionist, born on December 2, 1996. Being part of a Cuban musician family, Michael grew up surrounded by music, especially drums and percussion. At the age of six, he started practicing percussion with his father, Cuban drummer Aliocha Escuriola. He also received lessons from his cousin, Miguel Escuriola, who was part of the famous Cuban band "Pupy y Los Que Son Son." At the age of 12, he began to play with his family band "Barbara y VaiVen Cubano" as a timbal player. Jose Luis Quintana "Changuito" (a legendary Cuban percussionist) became his teacher when Michael was 14 years old.

In 2013, Michael became part of the well-known Cuban band "Charanga Rubalcaba," which was led by Guillermo Rubalcaba (a legend of the Buena Vista Social Club and father of the famous jazz pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba). At only 16 years old, Michael was the youngest band member. With this band, he played for three years and toured around the world. At the age of 20, he played with Schlager star Helene Fischer, where he was able to perform at four shows, including one TV show.

Years later, he toured with another Schlager star, Semino Rossi. With him, Michael participated in a Germany tour in 2019, from which point he became an endorser of Pearl drums and Sabian cymbals. Touring with Semino Rossi also gave Michael the opportunity to play with Jose Feliciano, the star guest of the tour. Within the same year, Michael made a CD recording for the lead singer of the famous band "Gipsy Kings," Manolo Gimenez. In 2020, he had the opportunity to make a video clip with the German band Culcha Candela.

During his artistic life, Michael had the opportunity to play in various countries, especially in Europe, where he is currently living. At his young age, Michael was able to perform at several international festivals like "North Sea Jazz," "Hennes Latin Stage," "Dancing Stars," etc.

In 2016, he decided to study music at Maastricht University with the main subject of "Jazz Drums," where he successfully completed his Bachelor of Music in 2020. In addition to his studies, Michael has been (and still is) giving drum and percussion lessons at several music schools, such as "Schlagzeug Schule Aachen," "Musikschule Brandt," and "Musikschule Zülpich."
