Pearl and Adams Welcomes New NEXUS Member
NEXUS, the Toronto-based percussion group now in its 31st season of solo and symphony appearances is pleased to announce the addition of Garry Kvistad to the internationally acclaimed percussion group. The percussion group was formed in 1971 and has continued with the original personnel until now. John Wyre, one of the founding members, has recently announced his decision to leave Nexus to pursue other interests. The other original members are Bob Becker, Bill Cahn, Robin Engelman and Russell Hartenberger.
According to Russell Hartenberger, "Garry has been a long-time friend of Nexus. He has appeared with Nexus at various times over the years as a guest. It is a very natural transition for him now to be a regular member of the group." Kvistad has been performing and recording with NEXUS members Bob Becker and Russell Hartenberger since joining Steve Reich and Musicians in 1980. Kvistad, along with Becker and Hartenberger, is one of 18 musicians to win a Grammy award for the 1998 Nonesuch recording of Steve Reich's "Music for 18 Musicians".
In addition to performing, Kvistad is the founder and CEO of Woodstock Percussion, Inc., makers of Woodstock Chimes. He is a 1995 winner of Ernst & Young/Inc. Magazine's Entrepreneur of the Year Award for the Southern New England Region and served as a New York state delegate to the 1995 White House Conference on Small Business. He earned his BM from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, and MM from Northern Illinois University, which honored him with its Distinguished Alumni Award in 1993. In the 1970s, he joined the faculties of Northern Illinois University and the University of Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, during which time he co-founded the Blackearth Percussion Group. Kvistad has served as timpanist with the Chicago Grant Park Symphony, a Tanglewood Fellow, and percussionist with the Cabrillo Music Festival Orchestra. The Balinese Gong Kebjar Gamelan ensemble, Giri Mekar, which he formed in 1987, is in residence at Bard College. Garry serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Woodstock Guild and the Byrdcliffe Arts Colony, Woodstock, NY, and as a member of the Board of Advisors of the Catskill Center for Conservation and Development, Arkville, NY.
Since their first all improvised concert in 1971, NEXUS has been captivating audiences with an eclectic mix of music drawn from all over the Globe. Their virtuosity and innovative programming have inspired compositions from some of the greatest composers of our time. Garry¹s first concert with Nexus will be on September 27, 2002 at a Faculty Artist Concert at the University of Toronto where Nexus is Ensemble-in-Residence. John Wyre and Garry will both perform on this concert that features several new works by members of the group and an improvisation for which Nexus is so well known.
NEXUS member Bill Cahn said, "in every way Garry is the right person to join with us on our music-making journey; he is a wonderful percussionist whose positive personal chemistry with each NEXUS member has already been established in previous collaborations. He'll hit the ground running."

Highlights
from the Modern Drummer Festival
Festival's
New Blood |
| It
isn't that often when a young drummer really stands the professional
drumming community on its ear but that is exactly what happened
this year at the Modern Drummer Festival in Montclair New Jersey.
Young Michael D'Angelo (12 years young) surprised everyone in attendance
including event coordinator Rick Van Horn. Michael started his solo
with an intense flurry that had the sold out crowd moaning in unison.
This youngster's 10 minute in the spotlight was well used as he
showed off speed, technique, and musicality well beyond his years.

Mike
Mangini does Clinic for Fork's Drum Closet
The
date is May 8th 2000, the place is Nashville, Tennessee. The reason
we were all called together was to witness the unbelievable. A
clinic performance that boggles the normal thinking drummers mind.
|
|
Mike Mangini has taken the lefty righty thing to a new level. His seamless flow between right and left-handed playing has the crowd stupefied. It is amazing enough to play in both directions but to have feet like Virgil Donati and hands like Dave Weckl and the musicality somewhere between Marvin Smitty Smith and Terry Bozzio and still be individual and have your own space and style. This is too much, unless you get to see it first hand then it's delightful.

Shapes & Your Drum Kit
In terms of choosing and using your drum kit setup, the most important thing to remember is that it is variable as our bodies' mechanics are not.
|
|
Although we can make physical adjustments to connect to our kits, the bulk of 'connection adjustments' are with the drum kit itself. The second most important aspect of our setup is how Its' sounds are structured. This structure is a geometrical one. In other words, there are 'buckets' of shapes to look at on the kit. There are lines, triangles and even the ever-popular Rhombus.

You Never Know
|

Greetings fellow drummers! Well, I'm winding down from an exciting year touring the world with the legendary John Fogerty. After touring the States this summer, we headed to Scandinavia, and I've just returned from Australia. Needless to say, this has been an incredible experience. Working with John has been a pleasure, and playing all those great Creedence tunes has been a blast. My musical relationship with him will continue into future endeavors.

Drum Magazine Review
Pearl Signature Series
Snare Drums
This Time itâs Smitty & Steve
by John Nyman
|
|
Itâs a good thing when artists and manufacturers collaborate on
new design ideas. The artists get free reign to create ãdream drums,ä
and we, the cash-spending drummers of the world, get new, great
drums to buy and play. Pearl has already produced diverse Signature
Series snare drums for Omar Hakim, Chad Smith, John ãJRä Robinson,
and Dennis Chambers, and the companyâs two latest come from the
imaginations of Steve Ferrone (Average White Band, Tom Petty, Eric
Clapton) and Marvin ãSmittyä Smith (Tonight Show, Branford Marsalis,
Sting).

Pearl Percussion:
Shakerine, Mini-Shakerine
and Mini-Ganzeiro
By Bart Fermie
|
| As
a percussionist, the possibility of having one instrument which
functions in two ways appeals to me. When I first concepted the
Shakerine, my thinking was that 1 + 1 = 2, right? Not exactly,
because as this instrument began to develop, I realize that because
of its variety of sounds and all the possible ways it could be played,
the Shakerine was an instrument which added the depth and
color of many cultures ö and which would give me musical satisfaction
for years to come!

by Raymond Massey |
Welcome
to Pearl's Tech Speak column and thank you for visiting.
In this edition, we'll examine cowbells and focus in on
their various sounds, how they can be incorporated into your set-up,
and how they can be utilized in your playing.
Of course the purpose of this is to sell more cowbells·Pearl cowbells. HOW TO ADJUST BASS DRUM PEDALS
and
OTHER INTERESTING PEDAL STUFF
by Gene Okamoto |
Sometime ago, I received an email from a drummer who asked how to adjust his bass pedal to make it faster. I gave him a quick answer and said to myself, "Hey, this would be a great topic for a Tech Speak article!" So here it is: HOW TO ADJUST BASS DRUM PEDALS and OTHER INTERESTING PEDAL STUFF.
Plain or with Peanuts
Like most things: cars, computers,
stereos, and candy bars, pedals come in plain and fancy versions.
Generally, the higher the price, the fancier the pedal with more
bells and whistles attached. However, even the plainest pedals have
two fundamental adjustments: spring tension and beater height.
