Modern Drummer Festival
Festival's New Blood
It isn't that often when a young drummer really stands the professional
drumming community on its ear but that is exactly what happened
this year at the Modern Drummer Festival in Montclair New Jersey.
Young Michael D'Angelo (12 years young) surprised everyone in attendance
including event coordinator Rick Van Horn. Michael started his solo
with an intense flurry that had the sold out crowd moaning in unison.
This youngster's 10 minute in the spotlight was well used as he
showed off speed, technique, and musicality well beyond his years.
Michael is a 7th grader from Charlotte, North Carolina. He is currently
attending The Charlotte Performing Arts School also known as The
Northwest School of the Arts. There he maintains his Honor Roll
status each month while playing in 3 different bands. Michael's
hobbies include the Martial Arts, and Basketball and watching drum
videos. This is where the future of drumming is heading.
Horacio Stops Show
Saturday May 20th in Montclair New Jersey Horacio (El Negro) Hernandez
and his band were the show closing and stopping set of the day.
Horacio led the band in several Latin Jazz tunes that had the crowd
roaring. The band was brought on stage by the crowd clapping a calve
beat and chanting Horacio's name.
Horacio took time to thank everyone who came but he said, " Most
importantly I need to thank all my sponsors, Pearl, Zildjian, Evans,
Regal Tip, and Shure." His humbleness and sincerity touched everyone
in attendance. This makes us very proud that Horacio is a Pearl
endorsee and a beloved part of our family.
Mike
Mangini does Clinic for Fork's Drum Closet
The date is May 8th 2000, the place is Nashville, Tennessee. The
reason we were all called together was to witness the unbelievable.
A clinic performance that boggles the normal thinking drummers mind.
Mike Mangini has taken the lefty righty thing to a new level. His
seamless flow between right and left-handed playing has the crowd
stupefied. It is amazing enough to play in both directions but to
have feet like Virgil Donati and hands like Dave Weckl and the musicality
somewhere between Marvin Smitty Smith and Terry Bozzio and still
be individual and have your own space and style. This is too much,
unless you get to see it first hand then it's delightful.
Mike put on a 2 ¸ hour show and question and answer period (and
believe us there where many questions) that had the crowd cheering
their approval. He covered techniques from his book Rhythm Knowledge
and shared practice tips. He also taught a very simplified technique
for learning and playing odd times.
To anyone who hasn't seen Mike Mangini in clinic we strongly suggest
if you have the opportunity please do so. We promise you will take
something away from it that is very useful. Not to mention that
you will laugh and be entertained beyond your expectations.
