Pearl Artists
Jimmy Degrasso/Todd Sucherman Joint ClinicJimmy Degrasso/Todd Sucherman Joint Clinic3/12/2010Two of Pearl's most renown artists get together for one amazing event... Last weekend, two of Pearl’s biggest artists got together to share the stage for a once in a lifetime clinic at San Jose Pro Drum in San Jose, CA. Todd Sucherman, of Styx, and Jimmy Degrasso, of Alice Cooper and owner of San Jose Pro Drum, gathered to celebrate the unveiling of Pearl’s new E-Pro kit which was on display throughout the day at San Jose Pro Drum. The day was capped off by performances by both drummers which included solos, playing along to backtracks, and even an impromptu jam session that consisted of both legendary drummers sharing licks and shredding sticks in front of the sold out Bay Area crowd.

Pearl artist, Jimmy Degrasso, has made a living off of rocking out with such acts as Megadeth, Suicidal Tendencies, Alice Cooper, and David Lee Roth. His solid playing, hard hitting, and fast footwork have helped him maintain his status as one of the best rock/metal drummers of today, leading Jimmy to one massive gig after another. Being a hometown clinic for Jimmy, he decided to rock out on a kit other than his custom orange sparkle Pearl Reference Series kit that we have seen him slam on for the past couple of years. Instead, Jimmy was playing on a Pearl Masterworks kit with birch shells, finished in Ivory Pearl (330). The sizes consisted of a 22x18 kick drum, 10x8 rack tom, 12x9 rack tom, a 14x14 floor tom, and a 16x16 floor tom. For a snare drum, Jimmy reached for none other than his 14x5x5 Jimmy Degrasso Signature Snare. Jimmy chose this kit for this clinic because of the brightness of the birch shells. While the Reference series is great for when he’s playing loud and heavy in huge theaters with Alice Cooper, the birch shells were ideal for picking up all of Jimmy’s more technical notes while moving around the kit during the clinic.

Jimmy heads back out on the road with Alice Cooper starting in April when they embark on the “Gruesome Twosome Tour” with Rob Zombie (with Pearl artist Joey Jordison from Slipknot on drums). For more information on their upcoming dates, please visit www.alicecooper.com, or www.jimmydegrasso.com.

Todd Sucherman, drummer for the legendary rock band Styx, continues to define himself as one of the greatest drummers on the planet. With a schedule that never seems to leave him with a day off, Todd is constantly going from stage to stage, leaving all crowds of all sizes amazed with his technicality, creativity, and his incredible use of rudiments and drum fills behind a drum kit. Although Todd is normally seen behind his massive Pearl Masterworks bubinga kit, in San Jose Todd decided to go to town on one of Pearl’s Masters MCX kits in Diamond Glitter (409). With the 6 ply all Maple shells, MasterCast Die-Cast hoops, and Pearl’s infamous Optimount suspension system, Todd was able to achieve the perfect amount of tone and warmth that he was looking to hear from the MCX shells. The sizes of this kit were similar to Todd’s usual clinic set up; consisting of rack tom sizes 8x8, 10x8, and 12x8 and flowing into both a 14x14 floor tom and a 16x16 floor tom. For his bass drum, Todd used a 22x18 that provided plenty of attack, punch and low end. For a snare drum, Todd used a matching 14x5.5 MCX snare which gave a well-rounded and full-bodied tone, while providing the perfect amount of crack to complete and compliment the rest of the kit.

As mentioned earlier, Todd has one of the busiest schedules out there, due to his high demand from aspiring drummer and musicians wanting to learn from the best. Throughout the remainder of March and into April, Todd will be performing a clinic tour around Canada before embarking on another hectic year of international touring with Styx starting in May. Artist Spotlight Mike Dupke- WASP
Pearl artist Mike Dupke, and WASP, started their North American leg of their busy touring year in Los Angeles, CA. last week, playing to a packed house at the Canyon Club. WASP is out in support of their late 2009 release, “Babylon” whose instant success has already had the band rocking Europe for 2 solid months shortly after it’s release. Mike’s hard hitting and energetic drumming, which are essential for a WASP show, were in full force throughout the fast paced set, keeping the crowd on their feet and cheering loud. On this current run, Mike is out rocking his Pearl Reference series kit in his custom “blood drip” wrap. This kit consists of a 10x9 rack tom, 12x10 rack tom and a 13x11 rack tom whose deep tones flow perfectly into Mike’s 16x16 reference floor tom. For kicks, Mike’s kit includes 2 cannon-like 24x18 kick drums, and is topped off with a loud 14x6.5 Reference steel snare drum.

Mike and WASP will be on the road around the US from now until March 28th, when they take their 2010 International Tour down south to Mexico. For more information on how to witness Mike’s drumming in person, please check out www.waspnation.com.
