Rob James

Rob James, Chair of Music at Eastern Kentucky University, served as Director of Percussion Studies at EKU from 1988 through 1999.  Before joining the faculty at EKU, Rob served as Director of Percussion Studies at Eastern New Mexico University and Mansfield University, Pennsylvania. The EKU Marching Percussion Ensemble has performed at the 1990, 91, 92 BOA Championships, served as a finalist at the 1995 WGI World Championships, and at three PAS Marching events. The EKU percussion program continues to serve as one of the leading programs dedicated to both western and non-western percussion studies. During 1987-88, Rob served on the percussion/arranging staff of the Cadets of Bergen County and 1990-91 he taught Jazz Studies at the Birth Creek Music Academy with Gordon Stout, Alan O’Conner, and Robert Chappell.

                                     

Rob founded the KMEA All-State and All-Collegiate Jazz Ensembles and served as President of the Kentucky Chapter of IAJE for six years.  As a jazz artist, Rob has performed with jazz greats such as Marvin Stamm, Tommy Newsome, Jimmy Walker, John Fedchock, Bobby Shew, Vince DiMartino, and Dave Brubeck. For eight years Mr. James assumed the role as vice-president of Kentucky Chapter of PAS and served as President for a total of four years.  Rob has also served on three planning committees for PASIC, most recently in 2003.

 

Mr. James is an active clinician and adjudicator.  He conducts several clinics throughout the United States and participates as adjudicator for Bands of America, Kentucky Music Educators Association, and Michigan Competitive Band Association. Rob has also served as Keyboard adjudicator at both the high school and collegiate levels for PAS at the 2002 and 2003 PAS International Conventions.

 

Rob has performed at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Conference, Music Educators National Conference, PASIC, International Trumpet Guild, and IAJE.  Rob has recorded five compact discs, including Stephen Melillo’s Stormworks. Rob is a graduate of Oakland University and Miami University and has studied with Anna Watkins, Robert Hohner, Robert Pangborn, William Albin, and James Campbell.
