Rhythmic Reading Exercises
for the Student Percussionist

The exercises included in this section of the Pearl Education CD-ROM are designed to give the student percussionist a step-by-step process for developing rhythmic reading abilities on the snare drum. Each "lesson" is generally broken up into three parts:

     •  Key Exercises, which isolate new rhythms into short 2-4 bar repetitive exercises. If the new rhythm introduced is new to you, start here and work through these exercises until you can play with the audio accompaniment without mistakes.
     •  Appendix Exercises - Uses the same concept as the key exercises, except with many more variations. Work these exercises if you need more practice on the new rhythms.
     •  Reading Exercises, which applies the new rhythms to a variety of time signatures. Generally, these start out with the basic rhythms and gradually get more complex as you work your way through the exercises. You can judge your success at mastering the new rhythm by being able to play along with the audio accompaniments with no mistakes!
