Every year, Pearl and PAS set out to help create an atmosphere dedicated to presenting the best performers and educators in the drum/percussion world today. We hope we have succeeded in our effort to bring together a diverse collection of new discoveries and innovative works with this year’s PASIC 2002.  Judging from the overwhelming positive feed back, the answer seems to be a unanimous yes!

Kim Plainfield

Finding time between his teaching duties at Berklee and relentless touring schedule, Kim Plainfield makes his final adjustments before his performance.

Though most know Kim from his worldwide tours/performances with Jon Lucian, John Pattitucci, Andy Narell, and Tania Maria, his method book entitled Advanced Concepts is considered a standard in educational circles.

Assisted by backing musicians, Kim performs selections from his latest CD Night + Day (with Lincoln Goines)

Bobby Sanabria

Bobby’s performance was not only a study of flawless techinque but a lesson in the origins of drumming.  His performance started with a story that gave the historical foundation of everything that followed….while playing a continuous clave pattern at the same time!  Without doubt, one of the most informative clinic performances at PASIC.

Central State University Steel Orchestra – Chriss Triplett

CENTRAL STATE UNIVERSITY STEEL ORCHESTRA led by Lennard V. Moses was one of the many ensembles that was featured outside the exhibitors area this year.  These two up & coming drummers make Pearl their choice…. Watch out for these excellent musicians!

Steve Houghton

Shown here during his performance with Gary Chaffee, Steve was featured in numerous concerts during PASIC including A Tribute To The Drummers Of Woody Herman.  Steve played in Woody Herman's Young Thundering Herd early in his career.

Virgil Donati

3:00 pm on Friday was when Virgil Donati further cemented his place as one of the greatest living drummers.  Greeted with a thunderous round of applause, Virgil commanded the stage as he began his performance before a packed room.

One of the most anticipated clinics of the show, he started by playing with tracks and then flowing into a solo that floored everyone there.

As shown in this picture, Virgil had a great time playing for the gracious crowd.

During his Q&A period, he answered questions regarding the Planet X tracks he had just played, his legendary bass drum technique, and practice routines.  One brave (but possibly confused) attendant asked if he could come up to play Virgil’s kit and without pausing, Virgil said “Let’s let the audience decide.  Those who would like to hear him play please show by raising your hand.”  After only six hands were raised he smiled and said “Sorry, the audience has spoken!  Next question..!”  This lightened the moment and everyone broke up in laughter!

Slagwerkkrant Drum Magazine has just announced that Virgil has won "Best Hard Rock and Metal Drummer for 2002" in their reader’s poll.  Make sure to get the latest releases by Planet X….. Moonbabies and Planet X – Live from OZ.
